The head of Farmal, a pharmaceutical company based in Ludbreg, Croatia, has been arrested, along with up to 27 company employees, on suspicion of corruption.

The Croatian Health Minister, Rajko Ostojic, announced that up-to 350 doctors are currently being investigated, and almost 50 have been arrested, as part of an attempt to tackle corruption within the Croatian Health system. The investigation centers on allegations that Farmal and its employees had been bribing medical professionals to prescribe its products.

An increase in transparency is of paramount importance to Croatia, ahead of their introduction to the European Union next year.
