It is understood the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is investigating two law firms over alleged prohibited links with medical agencies, including financial links. Legal representatives are required to declare any direct financial links with medical experts and Medical Reporting Organisations (MRO) under the Medco system.

In October 2016 the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) published new rules and qualifying criteria for companies wanting to join MedCo as an MRO, in order to prevent exploitation of the system. This was in response to several issues since its creation in April 2015, including the suspension of 45 users after it was discovered they had tried to avoid the random allocation of experts and the suspension of 134 "shell" companies. Although no further details have been provided, other than the investigations began in the last year, they may have been in response to these historic breaches.

The SRA has been more adept in showing its teeth in enforcement action recent years and it is to be hoped this has a suitable future deterrent effect.
