Continental AG has been given clearance by the European Commission (Commission) to acquire Siemens VDO Automotive GmbH. The two German companies are active internationally in the automotive sector. Continental supplies tyres, brakes systems, sensors and telematics and technical rubber products. Siemens manufactures and supplies electro-mechanical components and systems including brake systems. The merged entity will be able to produce a broader product range and become a stronger competitor to the current market leader, Bosch. The Commission identified a specific competition concern in the electronic control unit market, but after a detailed investigation it was satisfied that competitors would still provide alternative products to the market, thereby alleviating the competition concerns.
