Melanie Stark worked in the HMV department in Harrods and claims she was forced to resign over their dress code policy. The dress code requires:

"Full makeup at all times: base, blusher, full eyes (not too heavy), lipstick, lip liner and gloss are to be worn at all times and maintained discreetly (please take into account the store display lighting which has a 'washing out effect)".

Stark was repeatedly asked to comply with the code and when she refused, was asked to work in the stockroom or sent home.  Eventually Stark felt she had no choice but to resign.

Dress codes are permitted, however employers should ensure there is no discriminatory element and that there are good business reasons for enforcement.

We will wait and see whether any claim follows!
