On 1 July 2012 the U.S. Embassy expanded its visa renewal program to allow many more Mexican citizens and residents to renew their non-immigrant visas without a follow-up interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Previously, only visas that had been expired for less than 12 months could be renewed without a second appointment at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Under the new program, persons with non-immigrant visas can apply for renewal without an interview if their visa has expired within 48 months of the renewal application. This expanded interview waiver program seeks to strengthen ties between the United States and Mexico by making the visa process more convenient and improving visa processing times.

Additional qualifications and visa renewal instructions are expected to be posted on the websites of the U.S. Embassy and each U.S. Consulate in Mexico.
