Sithe Global's proposed 750-MW Toquop coal-based power plant has been put on hold over siting issues. State officials withdrew their support for the plant because Sithe Global has decided not to use natural gas as the energy source, and will instead use coal. They decided that the site, which had originally been chosen due to the natural gas pipeline nearby, should not be used for a coal-fired power plant. The Utah commission issued a statement, saying: "Since Sithe is no longer considering natural gas as the energy source, other locations are probably more suitable for the proposed facility and should be considered, especially in light of the desire to burn coal." A natural gas-based plant will be built in Utah once a new site is approved, and it will employ the cleanest technology possible while limiting carbon dioxide emissions.
