On 23 October 2007, the European Commission (Commission) approved aid amounting to £19.5m towards financing the redevelopment of infrastructure at Newquay Cornwall airport. The regional airport had been operating within a military airbase (RAF St Mawgan) but in November 2005 the military decided to cease its flying operations there. The redevelopment will convert this military airbase into a civil airport aimed at improving connectivity and aiding regional development. The total cost of the project is expected to be in the region of £44m. The Commission found that the aid was necessary to allow the construction of essential infrastructure and would not unduly lead to distortion of the market
