On Friday, March 13, 2009, Ms. Hilda Solis was officially sworn in as the 25th secretary of labor. In her remarks, Secretary Solis stated she would prioritize job training and other programs that would help improve economic conditions for working families. Solis stated the labor department “must ensure that workers are paid what they deserve, are treated fairly, and have safe workplaces” which will be accomplished “though tough enforcement, transparency, cooperation, and balance.” Notably, Secretary Solis recognized the union representatives who attended the swearing-in ceremony stating, “Let me say publicly and personally and without reservation: You are a very, very important part of what I will be doing here for the next few years.”
