We have commented previously on the proposals for community right to build, which will short-circuit the formal planning application process to achieve planning consent for small scale community-led development. This idea has been endorsed in a joint report of ResPublica and NESTA, published this week. It sits amongst a number of other proposals for community-led initiatives. As the Government’s ideas for the Big Society are taken forward through the localism agenda, the role of those involved in the planning process will be to provide the right framework for planning decisions which are required. We must have a smooth and swift transition from public organisations to community control if these proposals are to be realised quickly in the face of the impending public spending cuts.
