Alfred Nascimento, the Transportation Minister, resigned from office after reports alleging that the ministry accepted bribes in exchange for issuing contracts for infrastructure projects, it has been reported.
The Brazilian media reported that Mr. Nascimento, along with the heads of the local government agencies, was charging a five percent fee to win contracts. Mr. Nascimento has agreed to cooperate with the inspectors, granting access to his bank accounts and tax returns.
The Brazilian president, Dilma Rousseff, has removed two other officials involved in issuing infrastructure-based contracts from their posts. As a result, the government has suspended signing any new contracts for a period of 30 days.
