Commission has adopted a new block exemption for insurers - the instrument which provides a blanket exemption to certain arrangements from the prohibition on anti-competitive agreements in the EC Treaty. It has renewed two of the existing four exempt categories of agreement for seven years from 1 April, on joint compilations, tables and studies, and co(re)insurance pools. The other two categories in the old exemption – agreements on standard policy conditions and agreements on security devices – are not included in the new insurance block exemption. These last two categories of these agreements, together with any other agreement falling outside the protection afforded by the block exemption, have to be "self-assessed" to ensure compliance with the competition rules. Non-compliance can lead to significant fines and the unenforceability of agreements.
