California SB 1207 requires that a general plan’s safety element be reviewed and updated, if necessary, to address the risk of fire in state responsibility areas and very high fire hazard severity zones. The safety element review must be done concurrently with revisions to a jurisdiction’s housing element, which is required at least every five years. (Cal. Gov’t Code § 65588.) The bill also requires the California Environmental Quality Act’s initial study checklist be amended to include questions related to fire hazard impacts for projects in state responsibility areas and high fire hazard severity zones. The bill was enrolled on August 31, 2010.
