The Ministry of Health has recently published Advance Care Planning: A guide for the New Zealand health care workforce, which was prepared in response to an increasing sector focus on the need for clear and accurate information and guidance regarding Advanced Care Planning in the New Zealand context. The Guide provides standardised information about Advanced Care Planning principles and legislation in New Zealand and aims to promote consistency in practice, and assist in the development of local policies, guidelines, education, and training programmes. The Guide is endorsed by the National Advance Care Planning Cooperative, the Ministry of Health’s Palliative Care Advisory Group, the Palliative Care Council of New Zealand, Age Concern New Zealand, and Grey Power New Zealand and is available here. The Ministry of Health is also producing a resource aimed specifically at consumers (both patients and their families/whanau) which will be accessible on the Ministry of Health website by the end of 2011.
