The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has ended the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative which enabled U.S. citizens who were traveling within the Western Hemisphere to temporarily present evidence of passport application, rather than the passport itself. Those U.S. citizens who traveled prior to October 1, 2007 under the special accommodations, will be readmitted with the same documents if returning to the U.S. after October 1, 2007. However, beginning October 1, 2007, any U.S. citizen traveling by air to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda, must present a passport or other WHTI-compliant documentation to enter or depart from the United States.
