New York Tech versus Massachusetts Tech. Who wins?  Unlike the Yankees and Red Sox this fall, this competition continues. 

According to the Business Review and CB Insights, New York's start up scene is only getting started but already looks like a formidable competitor to the home of Red Sox nation.

Looking further at tech, in particular the innovative side of things, the Empire State had over 13000 patents granted to entities with a NY in the address line while those sporting a MA were lower at around 7000 granted patents. Looking more specifically at cleantech, there isn't much competition between the home of the Yankees and that of the Red Sox with Captain Jeter's stomping grounds outclassing that of the Sox even if that latter is on an upswing.

Looking only at 2013 (below), NY led Massachussets by about 60 clean energy patents with both being outclassed by California which has a diverse cleantech scene and Michigan which is the home of the US auto industry.

In 2013 , Massachussets' top clean energy patent grantees were Varian (Solar patents), Saint-Gobain Ceramics & Plastics, Inc. (Fuel Cells), Protonex (Fuel Cells), and FloDesign (Wind).

On the other hand New York's clean energy patents were dominated by GE's wind patents with additions from GE's solar efforts and even its fuel cell research to a total of around 80 clean energy patents.  IBM added eight patents for New York , mostly in solar tech ( which is suprising in and of itself to those unfamiliar with IBM's foray into cleantech) with one in Hybrid/Electric Vehicles, as did several other entities.

It is interesting to note that the CB Insights article refers to VC funded start ups and other financial measures which relate primarily to New York City at this point. A guide to VC's in NYC seems to point to a same conclusion of NYC as being the place to be in NY. Although still minor league by VC standards, there has been some work on expanding the availability of venture capital upstate including a public/private effort by NYSERDA and others, such as UVANY.

In contrast, much of the work in cleantech and the recipients of clean energy patents in New York State are actually located upstate, such as at GE's Global R&D headquarters in Niskayuna between Albany and Schenectady or at IBM or Corning's facilities upstate, for example. This differs from Massachussets where cleantech is centered in the Boston area and surrounds while the Berkshires and points west are less tech oriented....that is until one crosses the border into NY and gets off the Thruway in Albany of course.
