This Private Members Bill, on which we commented in our last Bulletin, reached the House of Lords for second reading debate on 4 July. It has now been referred to Committee of the Whole House.

Readers will recall the Bill seeks to increase the maximum fine in lower courts to £20k for most health & safety offences, and also to introduce imprisonment as a sentence for the majority of them. It also proposes that certain offences currently only triable in lower courts might also be tried in higher courts.

The Committee stage is due to take place today, 18 July.
