Centrica, the owner of British Gas, has announced that it may not reopen one of its three Morecambe Bay gas fields as a result of the higher supplementary tax on gas and oil producers. The Morecambe Bay North and Rivers gas fields have been closed temporarily for four weeks’ maintenance, while the South Morecambe field will be closed for an unspecified period for work and may not be restarted. Due to the tax hike North Morecambe and South Morecambe are now subject to tax rates of 62 per cent and 81 per cent respectively. A Centrica spokesman said they may choose to buy gas in the wholesale market instead of restarting production.
