A Democratic lawmaker introduced a measure that would impose an extraction tax on natural gas taken from the Marcellus Shale.
The legislation faces long odds in the Republican-controlled General Assembly. Governor Corbett, moreover, campaigned on a no new tax pledge. Rather, most observers predict the General Assembly -- if it approves any new taxes or fees at all – will permit them on the local level only.
The rate of the tax under H.B. 33 as introduced by Delaware County’s Greg Vitali would be 5 percent of the value of each 1,000 cubic feet of natural gas severed, plus 4.6 cents per 1,000 cubic feet.
