The Commission has put forward proposals to improve the EU food labelling rules. Key nutritional information such as: energy, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, sugars and salt content per 100 ml/g or portion must be displayed on the front of the packet. The nutritional contents would also have to be displayed as a proportion of the daily recommended allowance of each element. Labels must be clear, accurate and legible with a print size of at least 3mm. Voluntary information on the label must not detract from the mandatory information. The current allergens labelling rules for packaged foods would be extended to cover non pre-packed food, so that restaurants and other catering establishments will have to indicate the presence of allergens in their food.
