Spring Budget 2017
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond MP announced in the Spring Budget the next steps for delivering the government's Industrial Strategy by setting out the initial actions being support by NPIF investment including regional allocations of the £220 million for pinch points on the strategic road network, with details of individual schemes to be further announced by Department for Transport. An additional £690 million will also be competitively allocated to local authorities in support of local transport networks.
Bus Services Bill
The Department for Transport has published a consultation on draft regulations and guidance associated with the Bus Services Bill. Responses are required by 21 March 2017.
Vehicle Technology and Aviation Bill
The Government has published the Modern Transport Bill, now called the Vehicle Technology and Aviation Bill.
The Bill makes provision for automated vehicles, electric vehicles, vehicle testing and civil aviation; to create an offence of shining or directing a laser at a vehicle; and to make provision about fees for courses offered as an alternative to prosecution for road traffic offences. Memorandum of Understanding on further devolution to London
The Department for Communities and Local Government and HM Treasury has published a Memorandum of Understanding on further devolution of powers and responsibilities to the Greater London Authority and London Boroughs. This includes amongst other things the intention of the GLA to publish a new statutory Mayor’s Transport Strategy during 2017, setting out plans to transform conditions for walking, cycling and public transport and unlocking opportunities for jobs and housing growth. It will also address congestion challenges in London.
Older cars face 'T-Charge' within congestion charge zone
The Mayor of London has announced the owners of older, more polluting cars will face an extra 'T-Charge' when entering the congestion charge zone.
DfT gives 19 councils £4 million funding for traffic tech
The Department for Transport has awarded technology funding to 19 councils between the values of £50-300k in order to cut congestion, speed up journey times and improve the environment.
HS2 Bill gains Royal Assent
The Bill for Phase One of HS2 network has now received Royal Assent with construction beginning during the Spring. A variety of community schemes along the route between Birmingham and London have also been launched allowing access to more than £70 million government funding.

The Department for Transport has announced the names of the 3 train operating companies in the running for the next East Midlands franchise competition.
South Eastern Rail Franchise Public Consultation: Shaping the Future
The Department for Transport has published a consultation setting out proposals to improve the train service on the South Eastern rail network. The DfT are seeking views on the current service and future improvements by 23 May 2017.
Consultation: Wales and Borders rail service
The Department for Transport is seeking views regarding procurement of the new Wales and Borders rail franchise. The consultation runs until 23 May 2017.

Transport for North Strategic Transport Plan takes shape
Transport for North has announced its first pan-regional Strategic Transport Plan which aims to boost economic growth in the North and improve road and rail links.
