Unions are starting to use telephone town hall meetings to communicate with members about many topics, including contract negotiations, political elections and legislative issues. In 2009, the Teamsters had more than 10,000 members on one call about details of tentative agreements reached on major national contracts. More recently, in March of this year, 100,000 union and Working America members in 12 states participated in a telephone town hall meeting with Vice President Joe Biden and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, who pledged support for public employees who face mounting pressure to eliminate their collective bargaining rights.
