The UK cash machine network, LINK, has announced that UK banks, building societies and ATM operators have agreed to work together to allow charity donations from cashpoints.

The programme is intended to be in place for 2012 and will allow ATM operators to chose whether or not to allow donations via a particular ATM and, if so, which charities to support, including local charities and disaster appeals. Customers are likely to be able to choose a value from a range of pre set ones, e.g. 10p up to £10, or enter a specific amount of their own choice.

LINK will work with HM Treasury with a view to applying the new Gift Aid small donations scheme (which will allow small donations to benefit from Gift Aid without the need for a written declaration) over the coming months.
