Despite his long-time support, Utah Senator Bob Bennett (R-UT) is rumored to be considering legislation that would restrict the power of industrial loan companies (ILCs). While details of his proposal are not known, speculation centers around a recommended ban on interstate branching by commercially owned ILCs. This effort would be an attempt to ward off more restrictive efforts supported by bankers as well as through legislation passed by the House in May. Time is limited, however, as the FDIC's moratorium on consideration of ILC applications by commercial companies expires in January 2008.
