The State of Washington's Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council (WEFSEC) suspended Energy Northwest's permit application for a proposed coal-based plant, the Pacific Mountain Energy Center. The suspension will last until Energy Northwest makes CO2 sequestration part of the plant. Energy Northwest believes sequestration is currently unfeasible and was prepared to pay for emission offsets. The WEFSEC believes the plant falls far short of meeting the current pollution laws unless CO2 sequestration is added to the plant.
