On 22 July 2009 the European Commission (Commission) endorsed an Austrian State aid scheme that is to allow subsidised feed-in tariffs to the country’s producers of environmentally friendly electricity. Feed-in tariffs are electricity prices which are higher than the market price and paid to the producers to cover the extra costs of producing cleaner electricity. The measures are designed to increase output from environmentally friendly sources without compensating for extra costs and are therefore considered to be in line with the Commission’s State Aid Guidelines for Environmental Protection (OJ 2008 C82/1).
