The UK Competition Commission recently published a consultation paper on the manner in which retail payment protection insurance is sold. It proposes clearer information for customers on the cost of retail PPI and their rights, separation of PPI from merchandise cover and obligations on providers to submit information to the new Consumer Financial Education Body for its price comparison tables. Further, on 10 August 2010, the FSA published a policy statement (PS 10/12) confirming measures to ensure the protection of consumers in the PPI market. Firms are required to implement the new provisions by 1 December 2010. On the same date, the FSA published an update on progress made by mortgage payment protection insurance firms, following an agreement with industry to address concerns raised by the FSA in 2009.
