From 28 November 2013 all registered companies listed on the New Zealand Companies Office Register will automatically be assigned a New Zealand Business Number (NZBN).

This is the first step towards allocating a NZBN to all businesses in New Zealand. There are plans to roll-out the allocation of a NZBN to other registered entities managed by the New Zealand Companies Office by the end of 2014.

The introduction of the NZBN will make it easier in the future for New Zealand businesses to interact with government agencies and other organisations, by reducing the number of times businesses have to provide the same information to various government agencies. This will provide businesses with a more integrated registration regime, allowing them to provide and update key information once and in one place.

It is expected that businesses will save time and money, by spending less time and effort on government forms and correspondence.

The NZBN allocated to a company will appear on the company details page on the Companies Office Register and can be used interchangeably with the company number when interacting with the Companies Office. New Zealand companies do not need to do anything to obtain their NZBN.
