On 21 November 2013, the Medical Board of Australia and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency referred former Bundaberg surgeon, Dr Jayant Patel, to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal for disciplinary proceedings.

The Board and AHPRA allege that in 2003 Dr Patel provided false and misleading information in relation to his applications for registration and that the clinical care he provided to a number of his patients was below the standards reasonably expected.

If the allegations are proven, the Board will seek orders from QCAT to prevent Dr Patel seeking registration as a medical practitioner in Australia.

The disciplinary hearing will be held on 8 September 2014.
