The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has announced a public consultation on whether the substances methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone—often used as preservatives in cosmetics—should be restricted to rinse-off products only. Although current legislation permits use of the chemicals in small concentrations, SCCS has expressed concern that they may cause excessive skin sensitization, particularly when used as a mixture. The panel will accept comments until October 8, 2013.
