Following a public consultation process, the Policing Authority has today published a Code of Ethics for An Garda Síochána, the purpose of which is to inform and guide the actions of every member of the staff of An Garda Síochána.

The Code will apply to every person working in An Garda Síochána, and will include civilians, members of the Garda Reserve and sworn members of all ranks and grades.

The Code will apply to:

  1. interactions between persons working for An Garda Síochána and the public, and
  2. interactions between colleagues within An Garda Síochána

The Code of Ethics, provided for under the Garda Síochána Act 2005, codifies the standards of conduct and practice for An Garda Síochána and may be referred to in court and disciplinary proceedings. The implementation of the Code of Ethics will be overseen by the Policing Authority.
