In March 2013, fallen NRL stars Josh Dugan and Blake Ferguson got themselves into hot water after posting a photo of themselves drinking breezers on Instagram. It all might seem innocent enough, except for the fact their club, the Canberra Raiders, had a strict ‘no alcohol’ policy. Dugan was sacked and Ferguson was suspended for breaching this policy. However, the social media trouble didn’t end there for Dugan. Following his sacking from the Raiders, Dugan was well advanced in negotiations with the Brisbane Broncos – that was until he launched a Twitter tirade, abusing a fan with inappropriate and foul language. The Broncos ceased negotiations with him immediately.
Lesson: Postings on social media platforms are rarely private. Social media postings by employees that bring their reputation into disrepute can also reflect on their employer.
