The Legislative Yuan passed the Amendment to the Food Safety Act on May 31, 2013.  Major amendments include: (1) Add a new provision to explicitly require food business to ensure food safety and to spontaneously stop manufacture, processing or sale and to recall the food should it discover that the food is likely to be adulterated or unsafe; (2) add a new provision to confer the competent authority with the authority to promulgate certain categories of food to be under obligation to set up a tracking system to trace the origins of raw materials and the flow of the products; and (3) increase the penalties to be imposed for violation.
