The government is to give firms that recruit people who have been unemployed for more than 6 months payments of up to £2,500. The move was announced at the government's job summit that took place on 12 January 2009. The scheme will give Jobcentre Plus staff the power to award payments up to £2,500 to firms that recruit long-term unemployed people. The Department of Work and Pensions and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills will administer the scheme for a 2 year period starting in April and will invest £500m.
