The October 2008 Update of the Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment  System was released on September 19, 2008, Transmittal 1599.

One of the Policies noted in the Transmittal (Change Request 6196) is with regards to Revenue Code Reporting. The Policy states, "when reporting the appropriate revenue code for services, hospitals should choose the most precise revenue code, or subcode, if appropriate. As NUBC guidelines dictate, "it is recommended that providers use the more detailed subcategory when applicable/available rather than revenue codes that end in "0" (General) or "9" (Other)."

In many facilities the revenue code is determined by staff in Patient Accounting. Are your revenue codes to the most specific revenue code, rather than a general category?
