Vice President Biden announced nearly $1.2 billion in grants to encourage the implementation of electronic health records (EHRs) today. Biden appeared with Secretary of HHS, Kathleen Sebelius, and the National Coordinator for HIT, David Blumenthal, at Sinai Health System in Chicago. Of the funds available, $589 billion will be available through the Health Information Technology Extension Program for regional extension centers, which will directly aid providers implementing EHRs. The other $564 billion will be available for the State Health Information Exchange Grant Programs, which will support the exchange of health information within and between states. Both of these grant programs were authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. M
