An amendment to Maryland state law regarding games of chance for motor fuel suppliers takes effect on Oct. 1, 2010. The amendment expressly permits suppliers of motor fuel to "sponsor, promote, advertise, or otherwise perform or participate in a game of chance" if the retail gas station agrees to participate in the promotion. Previously, motor fuel suppliers were prohibited from sponsoring, promoting, or advertising games of chance offered to consumers at retail gas stations. The amendment still prohibits motor fuel suppliers from requiring retail gas stations to participate in the promotion.
TIP: Motor fuel suppliers or refiners may now conduct games of chance at local gas stations beginning Oct. 1, 2010, provided that retail gas stations are not required to participate in the promotion. Importantly, this law phases out on Sept. 30, 2013, unless the Maryland legislature enacts a permanent version of the law.
