The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) has begun public consultation on options to streamline environmental assessments (EAs) that are subject to both provincial/territorial and federal assessments. In particular, CCME is seeking comments on two papers: (i) “One Project-One Assessment Approach to Environmental Assessment,” which outlines key issues currently affecting federal/provincial EA cooperation and presents various benefits of achieving a “one project, one EA approach”; and (ii) “Regional Strategic Environmental Assessment,” which outlines options for assessing the potential environmental effects, including cumulative effects, of strategic policies, plans and program alternatives for a region. The CCME is accepting comments on these papers until March 20, 2009.
