• While ICE has previously focused on large-scale workplace raids, it appears that I-9 audits are trending upward. In a recent statement, an ICE spokesperson confirmed, "We've been focusing more on the audits process as opposed to large operations. We're now looking more at the paperwork or documents." Recently published statistics indicate that more than 1,000 I-9 inspections have been conducted since April 2009, with accompanying fines nearing $16 million. Employers should ensure proper I-9 completion and maintenance, and conduct internal audits to remedy problems and develop a strict compliance program in advance of government scrutiny.
