The long-awaited reporting date for the Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Senate Committee's inquiry into the comprehensive revision of Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act 1979 (Cth) has been extended to 29 October 2014. In December 2013, the Committee was asked to review whether comprehensive revision of the Interception Act should be undertaken.

More recently, the Committee's September hearings have heard from interested parties (including industry members) on the Government's proposed metadata retention provisions.

Other key areas contemplated by the revision and expected to be addressed in the report include expanding interception powers for security reasons and mandatory rules for local infrastructure protection in light of cyber security concerns.
