The proposed acquisition by Dorf Ketal Chemicals AG (Dorf) of Johnson Matthey plc’s titanate and zirconate business is to undergo an in-depth investigation by the Competition Commission (CC). Titanate and Zirconate are chemicals used for the production of inks, sealants, coatings and other industrial processes. The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has raised concerns over the likely impact on supply and prices of a merger of two of the largest producers of the chemicals in the UK and EU. Although the market itself is small in value, the OFT considered the potential impact on the market to be potentially too significant to warrant waiver of the duty to refer. The decision to refer the matter to the CC was announced on 19 November 2010. The CC is expected to complete its inquiries by 5 May 2011.
