The European Patent Office (EPO) have announced that the official fees charged for European patent applications will be increasing from 1 April 2014.

While it is expected that most official fees will increase by a marginal 4%, there are some fees that will be more significantly increased.  The fee required to be paid to the EPO when an appeal against an EPO decision is filed is set to increase by 50% and a search fee is set to increase by about 10%.

The management of cost is always an important part of managing a patent portfolio and increasing fees is a further incentive to critically review and strategically manage the life cycle of patents.
