UAW Vice President Joe Ashton has been nominated to sit on the General Motor Company’s (GM) Board of Directors, a first for the automaker. GM Chairman Tim Solso released a statement saying “Joe brings a wealth of knowledge from his work across many industries, especially his deep understanding of how labor strategy can contribute to a company’s success.” GM shareholders will vote on Ashton’s nomination on June 10 during the company’s annual meeting for stockholders.
Sara Nelson, former vice president of the Association of Flight Attendants – CWA, defeated the first-term president Veda Shook during the recent union elections. Debora Sutor will fill Nelson’s former position as vice president and secretary-treasurer Kevin Creighan was reelected to a third term.
IAM spokesperson Frank Larkin explained that there was no single reason for the loss of more than 6,000 members in 2013, stating that the membership losses were spread out over nearly 900 local lodges. Larkin attributed the decline to “the steady erosion of manufacturing jobs around the country.”
