EPA has issued draft guidance on best management practices (BMPs) for the handling of unused pharmaceuticals at health care facilities. The guidance, which targets hospitals, medical clinics, doctors’ offices, long-term care facilities, and veterinary facilities, describes techniques for reducing or avoiding pharmaceutical waste, practices for identifying and managing types of unused pharmaceuticals, and applicable disposal regulations. The guidance was prompted by studies that have detected pharmaceuticals in surface water bodies and drinking water in major metropolitan areas throughout the United States.
