The prime minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced the appointment of Mr. Justice Malcolm Rowe to the Supreme Court of Canada.

This is the first appointment by the Government of Canada under its new Supreme Court selection process. Mr. Justice Rowe will fill the vacancy left by Mr. Justice Thomas Cromwell, who retired from the Supreme Court of Canada on Sept. 1, 2016. The appointment is effective immediately.

Mr. Justice Rowe began his legal career at Gowlings, where he worked as a junior to Mr. Brian Crane, Q.C.  He was first appointed as a trial judge in 1999, and has sat on the Court of Appeal of Newfoundland and Labrador since 2001.
