BrandMonitor representatives, specializing in the fight against counterfeiting, found that in the 12 months from July 2019 to June 2020, sales of counterfeit premium goods increased by 28% compared to the same period of the previous year.
The main online platforms for selling counterfeit products are Instagram, Russian social media Vkontakte and Telegram. According to researchers, in Russia there are about 200 thousand accounts, communities and channels that sell replicas of famous brands popular models. At least 3.5 million publications were generated on these platforms, including more than 600,000 posts offering goods for sale.
Now social networks have become the most accessible channel for consumers, where it is easy to create an entourage of exclusivity with attractive photos. The BrandMonitor CEO Yuri Vopilov noted that the emergence speed of new accounts makes it almost impossible to investigate the activities of each such entrepreneur: “fake goods sellers in social networks are often not individuals but organized criminal groups."
Representatives of Vkontakte do not see an increase in the number of communities selling counterfeit goods. Social network workers block private and public pages that distribute fakes at the request of the right holder or by court order.
"TIAR Center" found that the social networks-hotbeds of fakes list contains YouTube as well. There is a large number of video blogs concerning the sale of counterfeit goods, showing interviews with fakes sellers and arranging competitions on illegal business income.
The main problem on YouTube is not the sale of such products itself, but the promotion mechanisms for implementation, says the CEO of the Russian office of Duracell Yuri Korotaev.
The Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) conducted a survey at the end of last month, where it was found that 65% of Russians support the introduction of criminal liability for manufacturers of counterfeit goods, 26% supported the introduction of administrative liability, 86% of respondents believe that sellers of fakes should also bear administrative or criminal responsibility.
