Ukraine January 28 2019

This report was prepared on the basis of in-depth research carried out during December 2018 and January 2019. The results are based on data collected from 12 leading law firms in Kiev. The report was researched by Gwilym Davies of Lexology Insights. Market overview • While the conflict with Russia over control of Ukraine’s eastern regions continues to rumble on, the Ukrainian economy has managed to stabilise somewhat in the past two years. During this period annualised GDP growth has stood between 2% and 3% after emerging from the red. • The primary players in the Ukrainian legal services market remain more or less unchanged, with no notable closures or mergers reported during the past year among either the major domestic or international law firms present in Kiev. Compensation and human resources • Like-for-like compensation levels have tended to increase for both fee-earners and support staff during the past year – both in local and hard currency terms – in some cases significantly. • 57% of firms surveyed increased fee-earner headcount in Kiev during the past year. The median net change in fee-earner headcount was an increase of 7%. Billing • Average like-for-like standard hourly billing rates tended to increase slightly during the past year across the sample of firms surveyed. © Globe Business Media Group 2019 2 Lexology Insights – Kiev law firm compensation, benefits and billing report 2018/2019 Foreword This is the fifth edition of the Lexology Insights Kiev law firm compensation, benefits and billing report (previously known as the Legal Market Intelligence Report). It was prepared on the basis of in-depth research carried out during December 2018 and January 2019. The results are based on data supplied by participating law firms, as well as interviews with partners, office managers and directors of HR and finance. The report was researched by Gwilym Davies of Lexology Insights. We intend to repeat this exercise annually, addressing any fluctuations in the market, along with new areas as suggested by respondents. For this reason, we remain eager for feedback on the usefulness of the findings and on how the report’s format and relevance can be improved. © Globe Business Media Group 2019 3 Lexology Insights – Kiev law firm compensation, benefits and billing report 2018/2019 Foreword Profile of participating law firms We would like to express our appreciation to all of the law firms that provided their time and cooperation in the preparation of this report. Their identity is confidential. All of the 12 law firms surveyed are experienced in advising international and domestic clients across a range of corporate, financial and general business areas. The sample of participating firms breaks down as follows: • All law firms (total sample for data analysis) – 12 • International law firms – 7 • Domestic law firms – 5 • Law firms which set salaries in hard currency – 5 • Law firms which set salaries in local currency – 7 No data analysis was undertaken for groups whose sample size was considered too small. © Globe Business Media Group 2019 4 Lexology Insights – Kiev law firm compensation, benefits and billing report 2018/2019 Methodology In gathering the information for this report, we spoke to senior decision makers at law firms and obtained details of compensation, benefits and billing rates. The following information is presented in such a way as to conceal the identity of the firms that provided the information, while still providing meaningful comparative data on compensation, benefits and billing rates. Readers may notice isolated statistical anomalies in certain figures given in the tables and charts. These typically result from occasional variations in the level of response from participants or limited data samples for categories not applicable to all firms, both of which can give rise to isolated distortions. In these instances, please refer to the charts for an indication of the general trend. © Globe Business Media Group 2019 5 Lexology Insights – Kiev law firm compensation, benefits and billing report 2018/2019 Key to tables and charts The following key clarifies what is meant by each job title, given that some are not universally applied by respondent firms: Fee-earners • Equity partner: Usually a stakeholder in the firm or (in the case of some local firms) one of its proprietors.
