On 1 April, the OFT’s principles for online and in-app games came into force. The principles aim to ensure that consumers are made aware of in-game costs before downloading the application in question, with a view to stopping unauthorised payments, such as those made by a child, without the account holder’s express and informed consent.

Other information that must be disclosed prior to the download, sign-up or purchase of the game in question includes whether the game contains any marketing or advertisements, how the consumer may cancel their subscription (and if there are any restrictions on cancellation once the download has begun) and whether any of the player’s personal data will be processed or shared with third parties.
