The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 received Royal Assent on 26 July 2007 and comes into force on 6 April 2008. The Act creates a new statutory offence of corporate manslaughter replacing the common law offence of manslaughter by gross negligence. It will apply to companies and other corporate bodies (in the public and private sector) and other bodies such as Government departments and police forces. Directors and managers can still be held to account through existing health and safety laws and the common law of manslaughter.
