Following on from Francis Maude’s announcement in December that the Code of Practice on Workforce Matters was to be withdrawn for the purposes of central Government contracts, Eric Pickles has now withdrawn the Code of Practice on Workforce Matters in Local Authority Service Contracts with immediate effect from 23 March 2011. As with the withdrawal of the central Government Code, the intention behind this is to create a more level playing field for providers and to stimulate competition. However, this time the Government has not brought in any replacement for the Code, such as the six Principles of Good Employment Practice. Instead, it is planning to seek views on whether any such Principles or guidance is necessary.
