The Tribunals Service published annual statistics for the Employment Tribunal for the period April 2009 to March 2010. The fi gures show an overall increase in Employment Tribunal claims by over 50% compared with last year. This is thought to be the result of both the rise in multiple claims and the changing economic climate. While claims for redundancy payments increased by over 75%, the claims for failure to inform and consult on redundancy were down by just under 35%. In addition, claims for redundancy pay were the most likely to succeed.

The average fi gure for a successful unfair dismissal claim was just under £10k. Disability discrimination claims produced the highest awards with an average of over £50k, while race discrimination, sex discrimination and sexual orientation discrimination cases had an average award of around £20k each. The overall average costs award was £2,288.
